Chapter 8

A Fake Beard

“I DON'T GET IT.” BILLY WAS ANGRY. “It's almost like Sheriff Weaver doesn't want us on the case.” The home school detectives assembled on the sidewalk in front of the sheriff's building and got their bicycles. Billy knocked his kickstand up angrily. “It's just not fair!” Billy seethed. He slapped the top of his bike helmet.

“He didn't actually tell us to stop looking for clues,” Josh said. “He just wants us to be careful, that's all.”

“But he said that the crook was dangerous and desperate,” Emily replied. “It seemed like he was telling us to mind our own business.”

“Well, I think we should keep our eyes and ears open,” Josh said. “After all, we've been involved with this case from the start. We've got to go home and do our studies. But let's meet at the park at 2:30 and look at those holes by the oak tree. Maybe we can figure something out by then. Don't be late.”

The others agreed that was the best plan. Josh and Emily rode home quickly. Mrs. Morgan had their lessons ready. The younger children, Elizabeth, David and Daniel, had already begun their studies.

Two rooms in the house were dedicated to schooling. Josh and Emily and Mr. and Mrs. Morgan had their library of books and supplies and computers in one room, while the younger children studied in another room. Mrs. Morgan spent more time with the younger children since they needed more direct attention and tutoring, especially with phonics and reading and math. While she was working with the younger ones, Josh and Emily started on their lessons. They began with Spanish and Latin, followed by writing and literature, math, history and geography, and science.

When the younger children's work was through, Mrs. Morgan monitored Josh’s and Emily's work and answered questions. She spent more time with them when they started a new unit or had trouble with a new concept. Since each child got direct tutoring, studying at home made for efficient use of time.

After lunch, they did their work on music and art and physical education while Mrs. Morgan evaluated their paperwork. Once their chores around the house were done, the children were free to concentrate on the activities they personally liked. Emily usually worked and played on the computer if she wasn't playing with her other friends who home schooled. Josh liked doing a variety of things on his own and with others. A few days earlier, he had been helping Carlos with some science experiments at Carlos's house. Some afternoons, the children in the home school co-op worked on projects together, like the leaf-collecting trip a few days before.

During lunch, it began raining. Josh was afraid they might have to cancel their trip to the park. It kept raining while they were practicing their music; but by the time they finished their chores around the house at 1:30, the rain finally stopped.

“You two are acting like caged animals.” Mrs. Morgan knew they were anxious to leave. “Just make sure you're home by the time it gets dark.
